The Chateaus were a vocal group from Newport News, VA, originally formed around 1952 as The Flamingos. The founding members included Fred Harris (tenor), Oliver Sidney (tenor), Leroy Jones (falsetto), Charles Sidney (bass), and George Winfield (baritone/tenor and piano). They changed their name to The Chateaus to avoid confusion with a Chicago group of the same name after winning a fan poll. In early 1956, Fred Harris was drafted and replaced by Edwin Hall as the new lead. By 1959, Charles Sidney moved to New Jersey, and Theodore "Pepper" Jones took over the bass position. The Chateaus disbanded in the late sixties, and an attempt at a reunion in 1976 did not result in any new recordings.
