The Checkmates were a soul group active during the 1960s and 1970s, originally hailing from Fort Wayne, Indiana. They were discovered by a notable figure and featured a diverse lineup of both black and white members. The group achieved significant success with their biggest hits, including the 1969 track "Black Pearl," produced by a prominent producer, and their cover of "Proud Mary." After disbanding in 1970, they reformed in 1974 and appeared in the blaxploitation film "The Black Connection" (also known as "Run Nigger Run"), which marked the first leading role for their then-lead singer, Bobby Stevens. Their album "F.S.O." serves as the soundtrack for this movie. The Checkmates last recorded music in 1977.
