The Checkmates Ltd. was a soul group active during the 1960s and 1970s, originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana. The group, which featured a diverse lineup of both black and white members, was discovered by an undisclosed individual. They achieved significant success with their biggest hits, including "Black Pearl" in 1969, produced by an unnamed producer, and their cover of "Proud Mary." The Checkmates Ltd. broke up in 1970 but reformed in 1974. That year, they starred in the blaxploitation film "The Black Connection" (also known as "Run Nigger Run"), which marked the first leading role for their then-lead singer Bobby Stevens. Their album "F.S.O." serves as the soundtrack for this movie. The group last recorded music in 1977.
