The Checkmates Ltd was a soul group formed in the 1960s and 1970s, originally hailing from Fort Wayne, Indiana. The group, which featured a mix of black and white members, was discovered by an undisclosed source. They achieved significant success with their biggest hits, including "Black Pearl" in 1969, which was produced by an unnamed individual, and their cover of "Proud Mary." The Checkmates Ltd broke up in 1970 but reformed in 1974. That year, they appeared in the blaxploitation film "The Black Connection" (also known as "Run Nigger Run"), which marked the first leading role for their then-lead singer, Bobby Stevens. Their album "F.S.O." serves as the soundtrack for the movie. The group last recorded music in 1977.
