The Chequers is a disco-funk group formed in 1973 in Aylesbury, U.K., by a lineup that included a bass/producer, a guitarist, George Young on drums, Paul War on keyboards, and singer Jackie Robins. Initially established as a reggae band by the Matthias Brothers, their first single, "Rudi's In Love," charted in the UK in 1973. Throughout the mid-70s, the band's music evolved towards the Philadelphia style, resulting in several chart entries. As the late 70s progressed, The Chequers transformed into a seven-piece funk outfit, performing for concert audiences across Britain and touring Europe. In the 80s, they emerged as a new entity with their own record label. Their musical roots in reggae and soul from the last mod era have since expanded to embrace contemporary sounds.
