The Chessmen were a band formed in 1964 in Denton, Texas, on the campus of North Texas State University. The original lineup featured Robert Patton on rhythm guitar and vocals, Tommy Carrigan on drums, Ron DiIulio on keyboards, and Tommy Carter on bass. Over the years, the band saw several lineup changes, including members who later achieved national fame, such as Doyle Bramhall, who collaborated with and wrote songs for Stevie Ray Vaughan; Bill Etheridge, who played bass with ZZ Top before Dusty Hill; and Jimmie Vaughan of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Other notable members included guitarists Jimmy Kay (also known as Jimmy Kay Herbert), Ricky Marshall, Richard Dace, and Johnny Peebles, along with Tommy Carter, who contributed on bass and vocals.
