The Chieftones, known as "Canada's All Indian Band," was founded in 1964 at the St. Albert Residential School in Edmonton, Alberta. The original lineup included members from various locations in British Columbia, such as brothers from Kispiox/Kitwanga, a member from Ayanish, and another from Kitmancool. A member from Zhahti Kue, Fort Providence, Northwest Territories, joined a few months after the band's formation. In 1969, one member departed, and the remaining members later adopted stage names and changed the group's name. The band relocated to Toronto, then to Boaz, Wisconsin, followed by Nashville, and eventually booked out of Boston. Their recordings spanned from 1966 to 1975. Notably, four members were part of the Tsimshian Indian Nation of Northwest British Columbia. Two members discovered they were long-separated brothers while at an Edmonton Indian school, which led to the formation of the Chieftones. The band achieved five entries on the country charts in 1975-76.
