The Chills is an indie rock band that was founded in 1980 in Dunedin, New Zealand. Over the years, the band has undergone numerous lineup changes, reflecting different phases of its evolution. In its initial phase from October to December 1980, the band featured Martin Phillipps on guitar and vocals, Peter Gutteridge on guitar and vocals, Alan Haig on drums, Jane Dodd on bass, and Rachel Phillipps on keys. The lineup shifted in January 1981, with Martin Phillipps, Jane Dodd, Rachel Phillipps, and Alan Haig remaining until May of that year. From July 1981 to April 1982, the band included Martin Phillipps, Alan Haig, Fraser Batts on keys, and Terry Moore on bass. In May 1982, a new phase began with Martin Phillipps, Terry Moore, Martyn Bull on drums, and Rachel Phillipps. The lineup continued to evolve, with various combinations of members throughout the years, including notable phases from November 1984 to May 1988 and July 1988 to July 1990. The most recent lineup in 2021 consisted of Martin Phillipps, Callum Hampton, Oli Wilson, Todd Knudson, and Erica Scally. Tragically, Martin Phillipps passed away on June 28, 2024, in Dunedin, New Zealand.
