The Chips were a vocal group from Brooklyn, NY, formed by a group of teenage friends. The members included Kinrod "Charles" Johnson (lead vocals), Sammy Strain (1st tenor), Shedwick "Bubbie" Lincoln (2nd tenor), Nathaniel 'Lil John' Epps (baritone), and Paul Fulton (bass). Their first recording, "Rubber Biscuit," was inspired by Johnson's experiences at the Warwick School For Delinquent Teenagers. Released in 1956 by Josie Records, the song quickly became a favorite on east coast radio, although it did not chart. The group toured with notable acts such as The Dells, The Cadillacs, and Bo Diddley, but they ultimately disbanded at the end of 1957 as the momentum from their debut single faded. According to Strain, "Rubber Biscuit" was recorded at Belltone Studios in Manhattan on August 3, 1956, featuring various musicians on piano, drums, guitar, and saxophone, along with one or two other unknown musicians.
