Steve Kilbey is a singer, songwriter, and bass guitarist who first collaborated with guitarist Peter Koppes in a glam rock band called Baby Grande in Canberra during the mid-1970s. After both musicians pursued other bands—Kilbey with Tactics and Koppes with Limazine—they reunited in Sydney in March 1980 to form the initial three-piece version of The Church, alongside Limazine drummer Nick Ward. The band's name was a shortened version of Kilbey's original proposal, "The Church of Man." Shortly after, in April 1980, Marty Willson-Piper, originally from Liverpool, UK, attended one of their gigs and met Kilbey. That night, he was invited to join the band on guitar, solidifying the classic two-guitar lineup.
