The Cinematic Orchestra is a musical group first formed in 1990 while its members were studying Fine Art at Cardiff College. They released one official single on their own label before gaining recognition in 1994 when member Jason Swinscoe was given a DJ spot on Heart FM, a pirate radio station in south London. Their debut album, "Motion," was released in 1999 and received critical acclaim, leading to an invitation to perform at the Director's Guild Awards ceremony for the Lifetime Achievement Award to a notable film director. In 2000, they were commissioned to create a new score for Dziga Vertov's classic 1929 silent film "Man with a Movie Camera," which was performed live during screenings of the film. This project marked a departure from their usual studio compositions, resulting in a live performance that later influenced their next album, "Every Day." The Cinematic Orchestra released "Ma Fleur" on May 7, 2007, and in 2008, they performed the soundtrack for the Disneynature film "The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos," which was released on December 15. In 2010, they established their own independent label.
