The Circles are a UK mod revival band hailing from the West Midlands, formed in May 1979. The original lineup included the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Tony Howells on lead guitar and vocals, Glenn Tranter on bass guitar and vocals, and Keith Allen, who was previously a drummer with a new wave outfit. After circulating a few demos, they released their debut single, "Opening Up," in November 1979, which reached number 3 in the indie charts and has since achieved cult status. Like many mod revival bands of that era, The Circles never released an album. They followed up with another promising single, "Angry Voices," on the Vertigo record label, which sold around 20,000 copies before the band decided to disband in late 1980. In 1985, the band Graduate released a track titled "Circles" (not a cover of The Who) with a demo version of "Summer Nights" as the b-side, but the single did not gain traction due to the lack of an existing band to promote it. The Circles reformed in 1999 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the legendary Mods Mayday 79. Inspired by renewed interest, they have continued to perform live and released a comeback single on Detour Records.
