The Clovers were a doo-wop and rhythm 'n' blues vocal ensemble formed in Washington, D.C., in 1946. Known for their constantly changing line-up, the group gained prominence after their first single and were brought to wider attention by their manager in February 1951. Over the years, The Clovers experienced several incarnations, with various members from the original formation participating at different times. The founding members included John 'Buddy' Bailey (lead), Matthew McQuater (tenor, 1946 - 1961), Harold "Hal" Lucas (baritone), Harold Winley (bass), and Bill Harris (guitar, 1951 - 1958). Additional members throughout their history included John Phillip (1952 - 1953), Charlie White (1953 - 1954), Billy Mitchell (1954 - 1957, rejoining in 1958), James "Toy" Walton, Robert Russell, Roosevelt "Tippie" Hubbard, Nathaniel Bouknight, Peggy Winley Mills, Ann Winley, Bobby Adams, Johnny Taylor, Ray Loper, John Bowie, Steve Charles (1980 - 1990), Johnny Mason, Andrew Lawyer, and Chuck Battle. The Clovers received several accolades for their contributions to music, including the Rhythm and Blues Foundation Pioneer Award in 1989, induction into the United in Group Harmony (UGHA) Hall of Fame in 1991, The Vocal Group Hall of Fame
