The Contents Are was a 1960s garage rock band from the Quad Cities area, specifically Davenport, Iowa, USA. The band was formed by high school students Dave Neumann and Craig Hute, who were previously part of The Blazers. They were joined by Larry Smith and Paul Staack, and they began performing live in the region, including shows in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Rock Island, Illinois. In April 1967, the band recorded two original songs by Hute, titled “I Don’t Know” and “Direction of Mind,” at Fredlo studio in Davenport. The 45 RPM record achieved local success, selling around 1,000 copies. After graduating high school and while attending college, the band expanded their performances to locations as far as Champaign, Illinois, and Minneapolis. Later in 1967 or early 1968, the band returned to Fredlo to record an album featuring Hute's songs. They had 100 copies pressed, which they distributed for free. In 2007, Shadoks reissued the album, enhancing the cover with a bit of color to the original line drawing.
