**Bio: The Cookies** The Cookies originated as a backup vocal trio in 1954 in Brooklyn, New York, consisting of Doretta (Dorothy) Jones, Ethel Darlene McCrea, and Beulah Robertson. Beulah was replaced by Margie Hendrix in 1956. They recorded under various alter egos, including The Palisades, The Stepping Stones, The Cinderellas, and The Honey Bees. In 1958, after Darlene and Margie joined Ray Charles' backing group, the Raelettes, Darlene's younger sister Earl-Jean and Margaret Ross joined the group. Initially, they recorded for Lamp Records and gained recognition after winning an Amateur Night contest at The Apollo Theatre. Jesse Stone from Atlantic Records discovered them, leading to vocal sessions in 1955. The Cookies achieved a Top Ten R&B hit with "In Paradise" in 1956 and provided backup vocals for numerous artists on the Atlantic roster, including LaVern Baker, Ruth Brown, and Ray Charles. They also backed Joe Turner and Chuck Willis on their hit recordings. Neil Sedaka later utilized them for his early RCA hits and recommended them to Carole King for Tony Orlando's recordings. The trio, now consisting of Dorothy Jones, Margaret Ross, and Earl-Jean McCrea, became known as The Cookies on Dimension in the early 1960s.
