The Count Five was a US band formed in 1964 in San Jose, California. Known for their psychedelic-punk sound, they achieved significant success with their hit "Psychotic Reaction," which reached the US Top 5 in 1966. The band gained attention for their unique stage presence, often wearing Dracula-style capes during performances. They released one album titled "Psychotic Reaction" and a few additional singles before disbanding in 1969. The band's legacy was further cemented by rock writer Lester Bangs in his 1972 essay "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung," where he mistakenly credited them with several albums that never existed, including "Carburetor Dung," "Cartesian Jetstream," "Ancient Lace," and "Wrought-Iron Railings and Snowflakes Falling On the International Dateline." The line-up of The Count Five included: - John "Sean" Byrne: vocals, guitar - John "Mouse" Michalski: lead guitar - Roy Chaney: bass - Craig "Butch" Atkinson: drums - Kenn Ellner: harmonica, vocals.
