The Counts is an American funk and soul group founded in 1964 in Detroit, MI. The founding members included an organist, a guitarist, and an alto saxophonist who also provided vocals. Jam sessions with their neighbors, a conga player and a tenor saxophonist, attracted a drummer to the group. They never had a full-time bass player, as the organist handled the bass parts with foot pedals. Initially performing mostly instrumentals, the group often backed local singers, most notably backing up a prominent artist and recording a demo that became a hit for another singer in 1968. The band then collaborated with a producer to record the R&B hit "Jan Jan" for a local label in 1969, which became a significant success in Detroit, leading to the rush-release of a full-length album. In 1972, they dropped 'Fabulous' from their name for their self-produced album. The group recorded three singles under pseudonyms for a producer before releasing two albums for a Georgia-based label in 1973 and 1975, both of which made the Billboard R&B charts. However, the band broke up in 1976.
