The Coup is a socially conscious hip-hop group from Oakland, California, known for their communist influences. Originally formed by emcees Boots Riley, E-Roc, and DJ Pam the Funkstress, the group faced a change in membership when E-Roc left in 1997 to become a longshoreman. Despite this, Boots and Pam continued to make music together. The group gained worldwide attention around the time of the 9/11 attacks when it was revealed that the proposed cover for their upcoming album, Party Music, depicted Boots blowing up the World Trade Center. This cover was quickly withdrawn, and it is notable that the discovery occurred just days before the actual attacks.
