The Daylighters were a soul vocal group from Chicago, Illinois, originally formed in Birmingham, Alabama in 1956 as The Five Sparrows. The initial lineup included Charles "Sparrow" Boyd (baritone), George Wood (baritone), Dorsey Wood (tenor and lead), and two other members whose names are not provided. They moved to the Chicago area in search of a record label and, through a local DJ, recorded their debut single. After meeting with another unspecified individual, they began releasing records. The group experienced several lineup changes, with Ulysses McDonald and another unnamed former member of The Dolphins joining after 1961. This was after a member left to work with another unspecified individual. The Daylighters disbanded in 1965, with remaining members focusing on a project that would eventually become known.
