The Decades were formed by students at Ellet High School in Akron, Ohio, between 1963 and 1965. Initially, they performed as an instrumental combo inspired by The Ventures, playing at local teen dances which helped them gain traction. Their first recording, a 45 RPM featuring "Come On Pretty Baby" and "Strange Worlds," was produced at the WAKR radio station, with 300 copies selling out quickly. In late 1964, producer Terry Rose, based in Canton, approached the band with the idea to create a novelty record that encapsulated various teen pop culture trends, resulting in the unique track "The Rat's Revenge."
