The Deceptions were a soul group from Hampton, Virginia, formed in 1968. The trio consisted of Malcolm Mason, Jimmy Williams, and leader Daniel Goldstone. They gained recognition for their three singles: “You’re Gonna Run To Me,” recorded at Brockington & Guess Studios and released on the Peace label; “Of All The Hearts” for Brooks Records; and “Success” for Goldstone’s own Stone Gold label. “Success” marked the group's final release under the name The Deceptions, after which they transitioned into PJE. The group released two albums, It’s Time (1976) and At The Disco (1978), both on the Stone Gold label. The album It’s Time featured the same recording of “Success” along with reworked versions of “People” and “Of All The Hearts,” with “People” evolving into the anti-drug track “Gettin’ High.” Daniel Goldstone played a significant role in various aspects of the music business for many years.
