Neil Ollivierra, known by his stage name The Detroit Escalator Company, is a multi-disciplinary artist born in Detroit. He first emerged in the early Detroit techno scene as the promoter of The Music Institute from 1988 to 1989, an influential underground after-hours club that served as a testing ground for the Transmat, KMS, and Metroplex record labels. His growing relationship with resident DJs led to his role as label manager during the labels' most prolific years from 1988 to 1992, a period that saw the rise of legendary artists. In 1996, The Detroit Escalator Co. released its first album, 'soundtrack (313),' through a London-based label. This now out-of-print album is regarded as a cult classic. The second album, 'Black Buildings,' marked Neil's first recording for a different label. Alongside the album's production, he created a series of acrylic oil paintings featuring abstract, monochromatic geometric landscapes, which were showcased in a solo exhibition at Detroit's Cpop Gallery. These paintings are now displayed in various homes and corporate environments across cities like Detroit, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Paris, and London. In 2000, Peacefrog released a collection of early recordings and previously unreleased tracks by The Detroit Escalator Co. titled "Excerpts."
