The Dixie Hummingbirds are a gospel group founded in 1928 by a 12-year-old and his classmates. The group gained fame when it welcomed a new lead singer in 1938 and subsequently signed with Decca Records, marking the beginning of the hard singing style that characterized gospel music's golden age in the 1940s and 1950s. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the Dixie Hummingbirds recorded several albums for Peacock Records. In 1942, the group performed at the integrated jazz club Cafe Society and again in 1966. They also provided backing vocals for Paul Simon on his 1973 hit "Loves Me Like A Rock." Ira Tucker was a prominent member of the group until his passing in 2008 due to heart disease. Despite his passing, the "Birds" continue to perform with new members guided by Tucker's legacy.
