The Edge of Daybreak was a musical group formed by inmates at the Powhatan Correctional Center, located 30 miles west of Richmond. The members, incarcerated for various crimes, included lead singer and drummer Jamal Jaha Nubi, along with Cornelius Cade, James Carrington, and Harry Coleman, who contributed guitar, keyboard, and vocals, respectively. The group evolved from an earlier band called Cosmic Conception, taking advantage of the prison's policy that allowed access to musical instruments. They developed their sound by covering songs from notable soul artists such as the Isley Brothers, Slave, and Earth Wind and Fire. All participants were released shortly after the album's release.
