The Electronic Circus was a British Synthpop band formed by Chris Payne, a former keyboard player for Gary Numan. Before establishing The Electronic Circus, Payne co-wrote the Visage hit "Fade to Grey" and collaborated with his former Numan bandmates in Dramatis. The Electronic Circus served as his solo project. Their only release, "Direct Lines," was composed by Payne but did not achieve chart success. Subsequently, Payne shifted his focus to Dramatis and brought in Paul Johnson Rogers as his replacement; however, the band struggled to find success and disbanded in 1982. In 2015, Payne reformed the band as 'Electronic Circus' (dropping 'The') with Paul Johnson Rogers and Mike Stewart as instrumentalists and co-writers. They released a new version of "Direct Lines" in 2016. The members of The Electronic Circus included Chris Payne (piano), Penny Heathcote (vocals), Tim Vince (keyboards), Mike Bunyard (drums), Terry Driscoll (bass), and Paul Johnson Rogers.
