The Exciters, originally known as Los Dinamicos Exciters, were a prominent funk and soul group from Panama, active during the 60s and 70s. Led by drummer Horacio ‘Ray’ Adams, the band emerged from the combos nacionales scene and became legendary for their vibrant performances, often booked solid for years. Their core sound blended Latin soul and funk, heavily influenced by James Brown, while also incorporating elements of boogaloo, calypso, and ska. The group's music resonated with the US Black Power movement, particularly in the Canal Zone, where Afro-Panamanians faced long-standing discrimination. As co-founders of the Instituto Soul, The Exciters made history in 1971 by inviting an African-American ‘soul queen’ to lead their carnival parade.
