The Explorers were a musical group formed by former Roxy Music members Phil Manzanera and Andy MacKay, alongside vocalist James Wraith. After Roxy Music disbanded in 1983, MacKay moved to Ireland, where he developed an interest in traditional Irish music. Seeking a break from studio work, he collaborated with Manzanera to create the Explorers. The band debuted in June 1984 with the synth-pop track "Lorelei," which showcased a shift from Roxy Music's lush arrangements to a more straightforward pop sound while retaining funky grooves. The Explorers performed their first concert for BBC Radio One in December 1984 and released their self-titled LP through Virgin Records in 1985, followed by a U.K. tour. However, they struggled to achieve commercial success, and their second album, which was recorded in late 1985, was ultimately shelved. The group disbanded in 1986. In 1989, Manzanera's Expression Records released the Explorers' second LP, credited to Manzanera & MacKay instead of the Explorers. Following the breakup, both Manzanera and MacKay pursued solo careers.
