The Fabulous Counts were an American funk and soul group formed in Detroit, MI in 1964. The founding members included an organist, a guitarist, and an alto saxophonist who also provided vocals. Their jam sessions attracted a conga player and a tenor saxophonist, leading to the addition of a drummer. The group never had a full-time bass player, as the organist handled the bass parts using foot pedals. Primarily performing instrumentals, they often backed various local singers, most notably Tina Turner. With the addition of Funk Brothers bassist, they recorded the demo that became Turner's 1968 hit version of "Proud Mary." The band then collaborated with a producer to record the R&B hit "Jan Jan" for a Detroit-based label in 1969. The success of "Jan Jan" led to the rush release of their full-length album. In 1972, the band dropped the 'Fabulous' from their name for their self-produced album.
