The Family Tree was formed by former members of The Brogues, including Segarini and bassist, after the band decided to part ways. Joined by drummer Newman Davis and keyboard player Mike Olsen, who later changed his name and achieved success with the hit "Do You Know What I Mean" in 1971, The Family Tree began their journey in the mid-sixties. Initially signed to Mira Records, they released their first single, "Prince Of Dreams," in September 1966. However, as interest waned, by early 1967, Segarini remained the only original member. The band evolved into a quintet with new members on keyboards, guitar, bass, and drums, and signed with RCA Victor Records. Their first release for RCA was the single "Do You Have The Time?" which showcased a more melodic, anglophile sound. In 1968, their only album was released, which was a concept album featuring intelligent, beautifully crafted pop songs with polished production and imaginative arrangements. The album loosely follows the life of an elderly spinster, divided into four sections: The Early Years, It Is Better To Have Loved, The Effect Of It All, and The Underture. It was solely written by Segarini and produced by him and an unnamed collaborator, with orchestral arrangements by another unnamed individual.
