The Festivals were a vocal quartet consisting of Vaughn Price, Earl Moss, Woody Price, and Leon Thomas. They made their debut on Smash Records in the fall of 1966 with the single "I'll Always Love You," which garnered some attention in select cities. Their most notable recording, "You Got the Makings of a Lover," written by Moss, was released in the spring of 1967 and showcased their harmonious vocal blend. Despite its quality, the song didn't receive widespread promotion, limiting its reach. The group struggled with promotion and slow releases, with their next single, "Hey Girl," coming out in November 1968. This track gained some local airplay but did not achieve significant sales. In early 1969, Blue Rock Records reissued "Hey Girl" but with little success. Their time with Philadelphia's Colossus Records resulted in three releases, which are more accessible due to various compilation albums. Between 1970 and 1971, they released songs like "You're Gonna Make It," "Baby Show It," and "Give Her Up," but these were primarily known only to soul fans in the Philadelphia/Jersey area. In 1972, they recorded "Green Grow the Lilacs" for Motown's Gordy Records, which was previously issued on the Originals in 1969. This would be their last release, as Motown did not continue to work with them. Their final known recording as the Festivals was on Lo Lo Records. Leon
