The Five Satins were formed in 1955 in New Haven, Connecticut, U.S.A. The group originally emerged from the Scarlets, a doo wop group led by Fred Parris, who had formed in 1953 while still in high school. The Scarlets achieved a local hit with "Dear One" before Parris established the Five Satins in 1954 with vocalists Al Denby, Ed Martin, and Jim Freeman. The Five Satins are best known for their doo wop classic "In The Still Of The Night," a song written by Parris in the basement of a local church. The group released this single on Standard Records in the spring of 1956, and it was later leased to Ember, where it became a significant hit, peaking at number three on the R&B charts and number 25 on the pop charts by the end of the year. Despite the success of "In The Still Of The Night," the Five Satins never had another hit of the same magnitude.
