John Irvine, known by the moniker The Four Plugs, is a mysterious solo project originating from the Northeast UK. In December 1978, Irvine recorded a single in Redcar while based in Darlington, Co Durham. This record gained attention after being played multiple times on The John Peel show on Radio 1 and receiving reviews in notable magazines such as Sounds and NME. Inspired by The Residents' version of "Satisfaction," copies of the single were distributed worldwide in the UK. Throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, Irvine collaborated with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer as their live-show tape-jockey, managing sound effects and music from cassettes and samplers. He is also the creator of the popular website entrances2hell.co.uk. In 2021, additional material from The Four Plugs was released on cassette by the tape label Industrial Coast, based in Thirsk, Yorkshire, not far from Redcar.
