The Freeborne was a psychedelic pop rock band formed in 1966 in Boston, Massachusetts, emerging from the remnants of two local frat rock groups, the Indigos and the Missing Links. The band's name was inspired by the film "Born Free" (1966) and they were associated with the Bosstown Sound. The lineup included Bob Margolin (lead guitar), Dave Codd (bass guitar, vocals), Nick Carstoiu (lead singer, rhythm guitar, keyboards), Lew Lipson (drums), and Mike Spiros (keyboards, trumpet). Initially, the Indigos and the Missing Links performed covers of Top 40 hits, but key members sought to create original material. In early 1967, the Freeborne began playing at music clubs and fraternities, eventually attracting the interest of blues musician Barry Richards, who helped them secure a recording contract with Monitor Records. Their debut album, "Peak Impressions," was released in mid-1967 and recorded at ESP and CBS studios in New York City. Despite their young age, the band showcased their musical versatility with multiple instruments, including piano, harpsichord, cello, trumpet, flute, and recorder. The album featured a blend of psychedelic themes and traces of blues, influenced by Margolin's experience at a Remains concert.
