The Go-Betweens were a post-punk band formed in Brisbane, Australia in 1977 by singer-songwriters and guitarists Robert Forster and Grant McLennan. They later expanded their lineup to include Lindy Morrison on drums, Robert Vickers on bass guitar, and Amanda Brown on violin, oboe, guitar, and backing vocals. The band disbanded in late 1989 but reformed in 2000. Tragically, McLennan passed away on May 6, 2006, due to a heart attack, leading to the band's second disbandment. In 1988, their single "Streets of Your Town," from the album 16 Lovers Lane, became their biggest hit in both Australia and the UK. The follow-up single "Was There Anything I Could Do?" reached No. 16 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in the United States. In May 2001, "Cattle and Cane," from the album Before Hollywood, was recognized by the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) as one of the Top 30 Australian songs of all time. Additionally, in 2008, 16 Lovers Lane was featured in the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) TV series The Great Australian Albums as a classic example of 1980s rock music.
