The Golliwogs were the forerunner to Creedence Clearwater Revival, formed by John Fogerty, Doug Clifford, and Stu Cook, who met at Portola Junior High School in El Cerrito, California. Initially calling themselves the Blue Velvets, the trio played instrumentals and "jukebox standards," and supported John's older brother Tom in recordings and performances before he joined the band. They released three singles, with the second gaining attention from Casey Kasem at KEWB in Oakland. In 1964, the band signed with Fantasy Records, an independent jazz label in San Francisco, drawn to the label after the success of Vince Guaraldi's instrumental "Cast Your Fate to the Wind."
