The Golliwogs were the forerunners to Creedence Clearwater Revival, formed by John Fogerty, Doug Clifford, and Stu Cook, who met at Portola Junior High School in El Cerrito, California. Initially called the Blue Velvets, the trio played instrumentals and jukebox standards, and they backed John's older brother Tom in recordings and performances before he joined the band. The Golliwogs released three singles, with their second single gaining attention from Casey Kasem at KEWB in Oakland. In 1964, they signed with Fantasy Records, an independent jazz label in San Francisco, drawn to the label after hearing Vince Guaraldi's instrumental "Cast Your Fate to the Wind," which had achieved national success.
