The Gurus were an American psychedelic rock band formed in 1966 and based in New York City. They were known for being among the first to incorporate Middle Eastern influences into their music, utilizing exotic instruments like the oud and unique time signatures to create a distinct sound. The band released two singles on United Artists Records in 1966 and 1967, and they recorded an album titled "The Gurus Are Hear!" which was planned for release in early 1967. Despite significant advertising in major music publications, the album's release was mysteriously canceled by United Artists just weeks before its scheduled date, leading to the band's eventual breakup. In 2003, the album was finally released on CD, although a vinyl version has never been issued. The band members included: - John Lieto - Vocals - Pete "Blackwood" Smith - Lead Guitar/Oud - "Medulla Oblongata" - Rhythm Guitar - Michael "Jason" Weinstein - Bass Guitar (Replaced Jonathan Talbot) - Victor "Vittorio" King - Drums/Percussion - Jonathan Talbot - Bass Guitar (Original Bass Guitarist)
