The Heartbreakers are a New York City-based band formed in April 1975 by Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan after their departure from another group. Richard Hell was initially brought in to play bass and share songwriting and vocals, and in July of that year, Walter Lure joined as the rhythm guitarist. However, in 1976, tensions arose as Hell's efforts to sideline Johnny led to his dismissal by Johnny and Jerry, after which Billy Rath was brought in to take over bass duties.
