The Ideals were a doo-wop and rhythm 'n' blues vocal group from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 1952 while the members were attending Crane High School. The original lineup included Frank Cowan as the lead, along with Wes Spraggins (first tenor), a baritone, and Clifford Clayborn (bass). In the late 1950s, they recorded their first single after Cowan had been replaced as lead vocalist, Clayborn was replaced as bass vocalist, and Spraggins had left the group. By 1961, they had a new lead vocalist for their single. In 1963, they had yet another lead vocalist and were poised for their biggest hit, "The Gorilla." By 1966, the group had been reduced to a trio. After their disbandment, one member adopted the nickname and collaborated with another artist for some mid-60s singles. Another member joined a different group for a single in the early 1970s.
