The Idle Race was an English band from Birmingham, UK, active from 1966 to 1972. They are most notable for featuring members who later formed another well-known group. The band was formed from the remaining members of another group after a member left, and they initially released one single under a different name before adopting the name The Idle Race. Their first album received positive reviews but did not chart, and their second album was a commercial failure. In January 1970, Jeff Lynne left the band to join another group, and he was replaced by vocalist Dave Walker and guitarist Mike Hopkins, who recorded the third album in 1970. Following further personnel changes, the band ultimately disbanded in early 1972, with the final lineup becoming the founding members of a new group.
