The Imperial C's, originally signed as the Imperial Challengers, joined Phil-LA of Soul Records on April 28, 1967. The group consisted of Evelyn Ross, Rosalee Peeler, Harold R. LaBell, William Sessions, Freddie Jordon, and Marvin Jordon, with Earl Marable serving as their producer and manager. Their debut single featured "I'll Live On" as the original A side and "Someone Tell Her" as the B side, although Northern Soul fans later preferred to reverse these choices. The songs were recorded twice, with the first version, which included piano, being an archival track added as a bonus on the Jamie CD, The Northern Side of Philly Soul. The single was produced during a session on October 10, 1967, which also included four gospel songs, and the recordings took place at 919 Studios in Philadelphia. The group departed from the label on February 7, 1968.
