The Incredible Bongo Band was a studio project created by record executive Michael Viner to produce theme music for the film "The Thing With Two Heads." Influenced by various artists, Viner utilized MGM studio downtime to record funk-influenced covers of popular hits with a group of pick-up musicians. Although the band never existed as a true ensemble, a team was assembled for a publicity photo. Their most recognized work is the percussion-centric cover of "Apache," originally a hit in 1960, which became one of the most sampled percussion breaks in hip hop and drum 'n' bass music. The group also recorded "Bongo Rock '73," a cover of the instrumental "Bongo Rock," which achieved minor success on the US charts, along with a cover of "Let There Be Drums," influenced by surf-style treatments of drumming.
