The Inmates were a British pub rock and R&B group formed in North London in the late '70s. The lineup included Peter Staines (guitar), Tony Oliver (guitar), Ben Donnelly (bass), and Jim Russell (drums). They emerged as a UK R&B group influenced by Dr. Feelgood but initially struggled to find chart success, failing to hit the UK charts with their debut single, a cover of the '60s garage rock track "Dirty Water." However, their follow-up cover, "The Walk," reached No. 36 in the UK top 40 on January 6, 1980, and earned them an appearance on Top Of The Pops on December 13, 1979. The band released two albums produced by Dr. Feelgood's producer, maintaining a similar musical style. Their lead singer took a break from the industry, and upon his return, the group was unable to replicate their earlier success. The Inmates have continued to release music and perform sporadically.
