The Lions are a collective inspired by reggae, sound system culture, and various musical styles influenced by both classic and contemporary Jamaican music. Formed in 2007, the band includes a dozen or so elite reggae and soul musicians from Los Angeles. Their sound is deeply rooted in soul music, characterized by the edge and roughness reminiscent of classic Jamaican records. The rhythm section was recorded to tape, capturing a raw and authentic feel, with intentional imperfections left in to create the dusty reggae soul LP they desired. The vocal team features members from the legendary ska band and others, including a successful on-screen actor known for roles in films like Swingers and High Fidelity. The group also showcases the sweet falsetto of another vocalist and the DJ stylings of a charismatic cousin of a well-known musician, who co-runs the i&i Sound System—a unique ice cream van that brings bass to the streets of the West Coast. Additional members include a guitarist formerly associated with notable acts, a Macy Gray co-writer and collaborator on bass, and musicians who have worked with renowned artists such as De La Soul, Barrington Levy, Beck, Raphael Saadiq, Big Daddy Kane, and the Black Eyed Peas. This diverse lineup and their shared passion for music contribute to The Lions' distinctive sound and artistic vision.
