The Lovelites were a female soul trio from Chicago, Illinois, active from 1967 until 1975. The original group consisted of Patti Hamilton, her sister Rozena Petty, and Barbara Peterman, with Ardell McDaniel replacing Peterman in 1968. Deniece Williams was also briefly a member before leaving to join Stevie Wonder's Wonderlove. Joni Berlman took Petty's place in 1970, and Rhonda Grayson replaced McDaniel in 1971. The Lovelites achieved their first hit with “How Can I Tell My Mom & Dad” in 1969, which implicitly addressed themes of teen pregnancy and abortion. In 1970, they launched their own label, Lovelite Records, which operated until 1973. During this time, one single from their label, “My Conscience,” reached the R&B Top 40 in 1971. The group disbanded in 1973.
