The Lovettes were a 1960s female soul group hailing from Jersey City, New Jersey. Originally formed in high school as the Tiaras, the group consisted of members Lois Joyner, Lily Hammond, Lorraine Robinson, and Margie Godbolt. They competed in local talent shows alongside friends Phil Terrell and Kool & the Flames, an early version of Kool & the Gang. The group secured a deal with MGM Records, under the supervision of Abner Spector, and changed their name to the Pets. This partnership led to the release of a single, “What Kind of Girl (Does He Think I Am)” b/w “Nobody (Knows How Much I Love You)” in 1965, written by Oliver Hall. Unfortunately, MGM did not promote the single effectively, resulting in the Pets being dropped from the label. Phil Terrell then introduced the group to Winnie “Blue” Lovett of the Manhattans, who renamed them the Lovettes, wrote their material, and helped them sign with Carnival Records.
