The Manhattan Transfer is an American vocal music group founded in 1969, known for their performances in a cappella, vocalese, swing, standards, Brazilian jazz, rhythm and blues, and pop music. The group has seen two distinct lineups, with Tim Hauser being the only member to participate in both. Their name is inspired by John Dos Passos’ 1925 novel "Manhattan Transfer," reflecting their New York origins. The original members included Tim Hauser, Gene Pistilli, Marty Nelson, Pat Rosalia, and Erin Dickens, all of whom were part of the group from its inception until 1972. In 1972, Alan Paul and Janis Siegel joined, alongside Laurel Massé, who remained until 1979, when Cheryl Bentyne joined the group. Trist Curless has been a member since 2015. Tim Hauser was active until his passing in 2014.
