The Manhattans are a soul vocal group from New Jersey, U.S., formed as a quintet in 1962. They began recording in 1964 and continued into the early 70s until they signed with a label where they charted their biggest hits up to 1986. The group remained active until 2010. In 1970, they replaced their lead singer, who had died of a brain tumor two days before his 31st birthday. One member left the group in 1976, and they continued as a quartet. In 1988, another member departed to pursue a solo career. Their biggest hits include the classic smooth soul ballad "Kiss And Say Goodbye," produced in 1976, and "Shining Star," produced in 1980. All original members are deceased except for one.
