The Marshall Tucker Band is an American Southern rock band formed in 1972 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The founding members include a vocalist, rhythm guitarist, drummer, flautist, and brothers who play lead guitar and bass, with the latter also serving as the front man. Tommy replaced the original bassist after their formation. They signed with Capricorn Records and released their debut LP, "The Marshall Tucker Band," in 1973. Although not an official member, Marshall Tucker played fiddle on many of the band's early albums. As of April 2025, the band continues to perform with Doug Gray as the remaining founding member, alongside drummer (formerly of Mother’s Finest and The Outlaws), bassist/vocalist Ryan Ware, keyboardist/saxophonist/flautist/vocalist, guitarist/vocalist, and guitarist/vocalist Rick Willis. The band’s name comes from Marshall Tucker, a blind musician who passed away on January 20, 2023, at the age of 99. The band discovered a keychain with his name while rehearsing in an old warehouse in Spartanburg. Tucker was known for his piano skills and tuned pianos in South Carolina for decades. The band expressed gratitude for his life and talent on social media.
