The Marvelows were a Chicago soul group formed in Chicago Heights, IL, in the late '50s. The original members included Melvin Mason, the Paden brothers (Frank and Johnny), tenor Willie (Sonny) Stephenson, and Jesse Smith. They gained recognition with their upbeat hit "I Do," which reached number seven on the R&B charts and number 37 on the pop charts in 1965. The song was initially intended as a warm-up but became their only major hit. In 1966, Jesse Smith left the group and was replaced by Andrew Thomas. To avoid confusion with a West Coast group, they were known as the Marvelows. Their second single, "In the Morning," charted in the spring of 1968. Other singles by the group included "I'm Without a Girl," "Fade Away," "Your Little Sister," "You're Breaking My Heart," and "Wait Be Cool." ABC/Paramount released The Mighty Marvelows LP in 1968, but the group disbanded a year later. They had a brief reunion in 1974, which was their only other time together.
